Choosing a web host for your site can be a thumb-twirling experience with so many web hosting companies out there. Most of them will cater your needs to some extent, but who should you choose ? I will bring you a little of my experience in web-hosting. I have used over 10 hosts in the last 5 years and have settled down to using 3 hosts.

I use 3 seperate hosts since (a) I like to spread my eggs around even if they are secure and (b) seperate hosts provide an SEO advantage when linking between your sites.

The first host that I would like to introduce and have been using for some years is Dreamhost. I like Dreamhost for a number of reasons

The Control Panel – The control panel is really a work of art, a customized contol panel that allows you to control everyting! This is not the normal boring Cpanel that you are used to.

Everything here is in place to perform every action that you can dream up. They support more toys than you will play with, but that is ok. It is almost dummy proof and if you delete something such as your database or website you can restore it.

Google Apps Integration – When adding a new site and domain to your account you may select to automatically setup your DNS server for serving Google Apps (docs, calendar, email).  Google Apps is a wonderful free servier from Google that allows you to run your email on your domain name (e.g you@company.com) and still use the simple and efficient Gmail type interface and spamproof system.

Support that works – This is the biggest problem with hosting companies! Dreamhost offers support via its control panel with Support history and an automatic checkup of your site and services before you submit a support ticket. If the system finds an error it will notify Dreamhost automatically. You may still open a ticket which is usually answered quickly. Please note that the basic package does not include telephone support. I personally have never had the need to call  them today for support.
